Counter-Strike 2

Counter-Strike 2 is a 2023 multiplayer tactical first-person shooter video game developed and published by Valve. It is the fifth main installment in the Counter-Strike series. It is developed as an updated version of the previous main entry, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (2012). It is announced on March 22, 2023, and it is released on September 27, 2023, replacing Global Offensive on Steam.

Like its predecessor, the game pits two teams, the counter-terrorists and the terrorists, against each other in several objective-based game modes. Counter-Strike 2 features significant technical improvements over Global Offensive, including a switch from the Source engine to Source 2, enhanced graphics, and a new server architecture. Additionally, many maps from Global Offensive are updated to utilize the Source 2 features, and some maps receive complete overhauls.

Upon its release, Counter-Strike 2 receives generally favorable reviews from critics. Conversely, the reception from players is mixed; criticism is directed at the removal of Global Offensive from Steam, the degradation of game performance, and the removal of several features that had been present in Global Offensive. As a result, Counter-Strike 2 receives thousands of negative user reviews on Steam, making it one of Valve's lowest-rated titles on the platform.

Skins can be obtained in three ways:

  1. At the end of a match, there is a chance to receive a case (drop). To open it, you need to purchase a key (with real money). Opening this case will grant a single random skin from all those available in the case, with a higher probability of obtaining skins from a lower category (usually skins for less-used weapons) and a lower probability of getting those from a higher category (usually knife or glove skins).

  2. When you level up, you receive a drop that can be either a random skin or a graffiti.

  3. Buying them on the Steam Community Market.

  4. Trading with other players, either by exchanging skins from your inventory or trading other items available for exchange, such as cases, keys, Steam trading cards, items from other games, etc. In any of these cases, it is up to both users to reach an agreement to complete the trade.

  5. Buying them on external websites with real money. This method is neither allowed nor authorized by Valve, so the Steam account could end up being banned, in addition to the risk of scams and fraudulent websites. As a fun fact, the AWP Dragon Lore has been sold for more than $10,000, and the M4A4 Howl has been sold for over $100,000.

One detail that many people liked is that certain skins come with a kill counter that only works when the weapon is used by its owner, allowing the player to know exactly how many kills they have with that weapon. This type of weapon is part of a category known as StatTrak.

Critical Reception

According to the review aggregator Metacritic, *Counter-Strike 2* received "generally favorable" reviews from critics, based on 14 reviews. On the review aggregator OpenCritic, the game received an average score of 80, with 86% of critics recommending it overall.

Jake Tucker from TechRadar gave Counter-Strike 2 a 4 out of 5 stars, summarizing: "Amid the wall of noise and violence," Counter-Strike 2 may seem impenetrable to newcomers, but will be a welcome improvement for long-time Counter-Strike fans. It's the best competitive shooter on the market, but it's so difficult for new players to get into that it won't be for everyone." Chris Shive from Hardcore Gamer rated the game 4/5, stating that Counter-Strike 2 is a "mostly positive upgrade to *Global Offensive*."

Charlie Theel from *Polygon* called *Counter-Strike 2* a "significant step forward for the franchise," praising the game's changes to weapon handling, visuals, sound design, and art direction. Ed Thorn, review editor at *Rock Paper Shotgun*, stated that *Counter-Strike 2* "captures what makes *Counter-Strike* work," though he noted that the game's foundation felt "a bit bare and a bit shaky" at launch, but he felt confident that Valve "has an FPS that will replace *Global Offensive* over time."
